Une branche est une branche. Et Natascha Sadr Haghighian jure l’avoir vue se mouvoir.
La nature crée des ressemblances, écrit Walter Benjamin, mais c’est chez l’être humain qu’on trouve la plus haute aptitude à produire des ressemblances et à les repérer. C’est grâce à ce pouvoir d’imitation qu’il parvient à établir des correspondances magiques avec le monde et, partant, à entrer en empathie avec lui.

À l’été 2013, lors de la première visite de Natascha Sadr Haghighian à la Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz de Nogent‑sur‑Marne, une grosse branche se détache d’un vieux platane du parc. Sans révéler son devenir ni statuer sur son sort, l’artiste fait d’elle l’élément central de l’exposition. Elle apparaît dans des états différents, tantôt potentiels, tantôt réels (fragment d’arbre, bois mort, planche, paillis, sujet d’un tableau), créant ainsi une correspondance sensuelle avec sa vie présente, passée et future.

À l’origine de l’exposition « Ressemblance », présentée à la Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz du 20 mars au 18 mai 2014, et qui interroge l’empathie en tant que capacité à émouvoir et à transformer, ainsi qu’à s’émouvoir et à se transformer, se trouve la question : « Que se passe-t-il quand quelque chose ou quelqu’un vieillit ? ».

A branch is a branch. And Natascha Sadr Haghighian swears she saw it moving.
Nature creates similarities, Walter Benjamin wrote, and the highest capacity for producing and seeing similarities lies in the mimetic faculty of human beings. This is how they are able to establish magical correspondences with the world and therefore to empathize with it.

In the summer of 2013, during Natascha Sadr Haghighian’s first visit to the Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz in Nogent-sur-Marne, a big branch broke off an old plane tree in the park. Putting on hold what would happen next to the branch and suspending its fate, the artist has made it the main element in “Similar”. It emerges in different – some potential, some actual – forms and states (as part of a tree, as dead wood, as timber, as wood chip mulch, and as part of a painting), thus permitting a sensuous correspondence with its current, past and possible future lives.

The project “Similar” is presented at the Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz from March 20 until May 18, 2014. It explores empathy as a capacity to move and transform and to be moved and changed, and starts with the question: What happens when something or someone grows old?
