Du 28 mai au 1er septembre 2013, le Jeu de Paume présente « Une exposition – un événement », troisième mouvement de la Suite pour exposition(s) et publication(s) de Mathieu Copeland, proposée par le jeune commissaire dans le cadre de la programmation Satellite.

À travers les œuvres présentées, les artistes Maria Eichhorn, Tim Etchells et Mieko Shiomi se jouent du spectacle de l’exposition, consacrant ainsi « l’événement » mentionné dans le titre de l’exposition en « non-événement ».

Les Spatial Poems (1965-1975) et Events & Games (1965) de Mieko Shiomi invitent à réaliser des actions et interventions minimales aux quatre coins du globe, et morcellent ainsi l’événement en différents lieux et instants. Pour les visiteurs d’aujourd’hui, la lecture de ces invitations fait résonner ces actions passées, dans un dialogue sans cesse renouvelé.

Fight Posters (2012), Live Forever (2013) et Let Go (2013) de Tim Etchells sont aussi à leur manière des partitions pour des moments de dramaturgie possible. Par la lecture et la performance, l’artiste affirme ainsi le caractère éphémère de l’action et de nos réactions.

Quant à Maria Eichhorn, elle se saisit de l’institution comme d’un médium en soi : en peignant, en blanc sur blanc, l’adresse du Jeu de Paume au sein de ses espaces (1 place de la Concorde, 75008 Paris, 2013) ou encore en programmant la distribution sporadique et aléatoire de billets gratuits (Entrée gratuite, 2013). C’est ainsi la visibilité de l’œuvre qui est questionnée et, par là même, celle de l’exposition.

“An Exhibition — An Event” considers the moment when the artwork becomes an abstraction of itself, playing on the exhibition as spectacle. The event, considered here in its widest sense and using a fragmentary, deceptive approach, thus celebrates the non-event.

For Spatial Poems (1965-75) and Events & Games (1965), Mieko Shiomi sent out invitations to carry out small actions and interventions all over the world, leading to the fragmentation of the event into different places and times. Reading these invitations today provides an echo of these past actions, generating a dialogue that is continuously renewed.

With his works Fight Posters (2012), Live Forever (2013) and Let Go (2013), Tim Etchells, through reading and performance, affirms the ephemerality of action, and of our reactions. These scores thereby create possible situations of dramaturgy.

Maria Eichhorn, by painting, in white on white, the address of the Jeu de Paume in the interstitial spaces (1 place de Ia Concorde, 75008 Paris, 2013) and by arranging for the sporadic and random distribution of tickets offering free entry to all the events taking place at the time (Entrée gratuite, 2013), uses the institution as a medium in itself to question the very perception of the artwork and, in turn, the exhibition itself. Through the prism of the exhibition, an understanding of the institution is affirmed. And although an exhibition’s format can be envisaged in terms of time and space, it remains a material to construct and fragment.
