How do you show words? Can words be made into an exhibition?

That was the challenge taken up by curator Mathieu Copeland as curator of the Jeu de Paume’s satellite programme in 2013. This comprises four exhibitions at the Place de la Concorde site and at the Maison d’Art Bernard Anthonioz in Nogent-sur-Marne.

The first, “A spoken exhibition” at the Jeu de Paume, to 12 May, considers the exhibition of the word by oral means. It is articulated in two parts: “an exhibition for reading,” and three “spoken retrospectives.”

“An exhibition to be read” takes the form of a book made available at Jeu de Paume, bringing together texts for reading aloud by Vito Acconci, Delphine Coindet, Gilles Furtwängler, Matt Golden, Alison Knowles, Loreto Martínez Troncoso, Raffaella della Olga, Francesco Pedraglio, Aki Sasamoto, Benjamin Seror and Cally Spooner. The exhibition becomes a living form, both intellectual and corporeal.

For the “spoken retrospectives,” Mathieu Copeland invited Gustav Metzger, David Medalla and Yona Friedman, three artists whose work is based on destruction, immateriality and utopian ideas, to present their oeuvres orally. Their interviews generate a mental exhibition as they multiply accounts of their work, reflections and histories.
