For his video portrait, photographer Mathieu Pernot comments his show « The Crossing », presented at the Jeu de Paume from February 11 until May 18, 2014. This exhibition is indeed a chronological crossing through his work, starting with his first series from 1995-1997, Photo Booths, and ending with his latest one, Fire, specially created for the Jeu de Paume. It is also a « crossing » through our contemporary history, personified by characters who live on the margins of society – gipsies, migrants and inhabitants from high-rise estates. Mathieu Pernot tackles themes such as town planning, migrations and incarceration, with an approach that inherits from documentary photography but refuses its authority. Instead, he offers a new take on the codes of this genre (for example, by using archival documents or vernacular pictures), and gives us an opportunity to question the status of images and the way we look at them.
